Identity Property of Addition / Multiplication
- Identity Property of Addition (IdentityPA)
- When ever you add zero to
anything you always end up with what you started with. The identity of what you started with
does not change.
(The identity element of addition is 0)
Identity Property of Addition (the value does not change) |
a + 0 = a |
8 + 0 = 8 |
(a + b) + 0 = (a + b) |
0 + z = z |
0 + (3 + y) = (3 + y) |
7 = 0 + 7 |
- Identity Property of Multiplication (IdentityPM)
- When ever you multiply
anything by one you always end up with what you started with. The identity of what you started with
does not change.
(The identity element of multiplication is 1)
Identity Property of Multiplication (the value does not change) |
a • 1 = a |
8 • 1 = 8 |
(a • b) • 1 = (a • b) |
(x + y) • 1 = (x + y) |
(3 • y) = (3 • y) • 1 |
1 • (-4 + x) = (-4 + x) |
